Biography

Fletcher Benton was born in 1931 in Ohio. He earned his B.F.A. from Miami University in Ohio in 1956 and immediately thereafter moved to California. He has taught at the California College of Arts, San Francisco Art Institute, and California State University, San Jose. In addition to having solo exhibitions at the San Jose Museum of Art, Benton has also shown at such institutions as the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco; Phoenix Art Museum, Arizona; Miami University Art Museum, Ohio; and several galleries internationally. His works are held in the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Milwaukee Art Center, Wisconsin; Victoria and Albert Museum, England; and Museum Ludwig, Germany, among others. SJMA currently owns six sculptures (including another letter U from the Folded Square series), two prints, and one photograph by the artist. (SJMA Collections Committee, 2006)
